As soon as Maud ran out of the room, Sandy realized she thought he planned to betray her by standing by for the full examination the doctor wanted to do. The truth was, he hadnât even thought of why she shouldnât have her ribs looked at. He was sure they were probably hurt and it was only his concern for her injuries that he forgot for a moment she couldnât have her torso exposed to the doctor. What an idiot he was.
âIâm sorry, Doctor. Iâve known the boy almost his whole life. Heâs always been one of those nervous types. Is there anything you recommend we do to help him?â
âSince he wouldnât let me touch anything but his face, all I can suggest are some cold compresses until the swelling goes down. Itâs going to turn some ugly colors before it heals, but I didnât feel any breaks in the bones. He was lucky, though. Iâve seen some injuries like his result in broken eye sockets and bent noses. See if you can impress on him the dangers of fighting.â
âI think he knows. This wasnât his doing.â
âGood to hear. Wish I couldâve gotten a look at those ribs. Iâm sure they are bruised and possibly broken.â The doctor shook his head and handed Sandy a couple of pieces of white cloth. âIf you can find your lad again, I suggest wetting these in the cool stream and pressing them to his face.â He laughed. âIf heâll let you. Boyâs as skittish as a colt.â
âHe sure is. Thank you for your time.â Sandy stood and took his leave. He was sure he knew where to find Maud. And he was already planning a trip there. The stables. She always sought comfort with her horse. Like some ladies took solace from their small dogs.
When he arrived at the stables, he asked for Peter Blake. Might as well take his statement before insisting Maud accompany him to the river.
Blake described the two men who attacked Maud and even gave what names heâd heard. Sandy was happy to have a reliable witness to this incident. He wished he could find another such for the happenings on the battlefield. Even the young lad who fetched Blake when he saw what the men tried to do to Maud was precise about details for one so young.
Satisfied with their statements and thinking Maud had surely had enough time with Khan to be ready to speak with him in a sensible manner, Sandy went in search of her.
To his surprise as he came around the corner and spied her, she was wiping tears off her face. It looked as if it hurt as she was dabbing at it gingerly.
He dashed forward, wanting to take her in his arms and comfort her.
Realizing any number of people could see his action, he reined himself in.
She stared at him. âWhat are you following me? Didnât you do enough back there with the doctor?â
Sandy reached a hand toward her. âIâm sorry.
